Reiki is more than just a healing technique—it’s a gentle, non-invasive energy practice that helps restore balance on physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual levels. But what is Reiki really, and how does it work, even when the practitioner and receiver are miles apart?
What is Reiki?
Reiki is a Japanese word meaning “universal life energy.” It was developed in the early 20th century by Mikao Usui as a method of energy healing through the hands, based on spiritual principles.
Reiki supports the natural flow of life force energy in the body. It also helps remove energetic blockages that may cause emotional, physical, or mental distress. Much like acupuncture or acupressure, it works on the principle that restoring energetic balance can promote healing and overall well-being. However, Reiki does so through gentle touch or even from a distance, using hands energy and focused intention, not needles or pressure points.
How Does Reiki Work?
The practitioner serves as a channel for universal energy, which flows to the receiver. The energy doesn’t come from the practitioner, but through them. The intention is to support the body’s natural healing processes and to balance energy centers (chakras).
During in-person sessions, the practitioner gently places their hands on or near the body. The palms are considered energetic centers, or minor chakras, through which Reiki flows naturally to support the receiver’s healing process.

What to Expect During a Session
Many people feel warmth, tingling, or a gentle pulsing where the energy flows, which shows the body’s response to the healing energy. These sensations help create a deep sense of relaxation and balance. However, it’s also possible that the receiver doesn’t feel anything special. Or may simply fall asleep and wake up feeling refreshed. Even then, the therapy is working for the highest good of the receiver. Some common subtle sensations include gentle stomach rumbling or soft shifts in energy, which are signs the body is adjusting and healing.
Reiki is a complementary therapy, which means it works together with standard medical care to enhance well-being. However, is not meant to replace professional medical treatment.
What Is Distance Reiki?
Energy is not bound by time or space. Distance Reiki uses symbols and intention to connect energetically with someone, regardless of their location. Sessions can be just as powerful as in-person ones, especially when the receiver is open and present.
From my experience, the results without being in the same physical space with the reciever are still effective. The limitations of remote healing lie in the client’s disbelief or lack of comfort. This is because all energy work involves also self-healing and free will. Doubt and disbelief can constrain the flow.
Is It Scientifically Proven?
While Reiki is often labeled as a complementary or alternative practice, studies show its effectiveness in reducing stress, anxiety, and pain. In-person healing sessions are increasingly offered in hospitals and medical wellness centers worldwide.
Studies suggest Reiki can positively impact quality of life, particularly when used in combination with other therapies, according to a meta-analysis published in BioMed Central.
Reiki has been found to be more effective than placebo in reducing anxiety and depression symptoms in some populations, according to a study published on Frontiers.
Some studies suggest Reiki may be helpful in reducing stress and burnout, but the evidence is less conclusive than for pain and anxiety, according to a study published on the National Institutes of Health (NIH) site.
